This GORGEOUS cotton 1920's/30's lone star quilt is all precisely hand and machine pieced and hand quilted, with a strippy border that contains all of the colors in the interior of the star. The quilt was made by Nellie Elisabeth Geron Newell (b. 1892) who married Iven Bert Newell (b. 1/9/1895 - d. 1/8/1951) on 1/19/1914. They lived on a farm in Urbana Township, Champaign County, Ohio. She made the quilt in this farmhouse. I bought the quilt from her grandson, who is now 68 and lives in the same farmhouse. It measures 78" X 78" and is in excellent condition, with a few small spots (see pics) and no wear. The quilt feels strong and sturdy throughout.
The hand quilting is superb, with close straight line, cable, feathered, and other designs in the background, all at an even 10-12 stitches to the inch.
The back is white, the hand stitched binding is the same pumpkin color used in the interior, and the batting is thin.
The PRECISE PIECEWORK, LUSH HAND QUILTING, and NICE CONDITION make this vintage beauty stand out -- it would make a terrific wall hanging!
