Fascinating circa 1908–1910 view of the Cotton Docks on the Mobile River at Mobile, Alabama. An exceptionally busy working-waterfront scene shows a horse- or mule-drawn wagon hauling cotton in the foreground, stacks of compressed cotton bales, lumber and firewood piled along the wharf, dock workers and horse-drawn vehicles, and two river steamboats. The large packet steamer at the dock has twin decorated smokestacks, multiple decks and a high pilothouse. A wonderful glimpse of Mobile when cotton, lumber, river transportation and maritime commerce converged on its bustling waterfront.
