A remarkably detailed early-20th-century photograph of Cleveland\'s working industrial waterfront, circa 1915–1916.
This original photograph provides an unusually information-rich view of the Cuyahoga River industrial district: factories and warehouses crowd the waterfront, smokestacks fill the skyline, boats occupy the river, and railroad/bridge structures, a large derrick and stacked freight document the commercial activity of the area.
Especially compelling are the numerous Cleveland and Ohio businesses that can still be identified directly from signs within the photograph. Visible are:
Ullman-Philpott Mfg. Co.— its large painted sign advertises “Paint, Colors, White Lead, Inks.”
Lake Erie Ice Company— prominently identified on a waterfront industrial building.
R. T. Lyon— the long-established Cleveland forwarding and commission merchant and salt dealer.
Wolf Mountain Springs— prominently advertised on a building at left.
A. S. Deutsch & Co.— with the painted advertisement “Cash for Old Metals.”
Acme Soap— a large painted wall advertisement visible behind the R. T. Lyon building.
Beyond the individual businesses, the photograph is an evocative record of Cleveland\'s industrial landscape: smoke rising from numerous stacks, river traffic, rail and waterfront infrastructure, warehouses and active commercial buildings extending into the atmospheric distance.
