This real photo postcard preserves a photograph of the original hospital complex at Patton, California, in San Bernardino County. Opened in 1893 as the Southern California State Asylum for the Insane and Inebriates, it was built to the Kirkbride Plan, a castle-like design favored for large 19th-century psychiatric hospitals, and took the name \"Patton\" around 1900, honoring a Board of Managers member.
The photograph frames the original structure\'s full sweep: connected brick wings under steep gables, a tall corner tower, and an arcaded porch, shot across an open, brush-covered field. The composition lets the building\'s turreted silhouette dominate.
The original buildings were demolished after the 1923 earthquake, and this card\'s Kodak stamp box dates its print to 1950 or later, well after the structure it depicts was gone.
Patton State Hospital still operates on the same grounds. Nearly 2,024 patients died and were buried there between 1893 and 1934, later marked by a memorial. The hospital\'s on-site museum, in a 1920s cottage, built its collection partly from postcards and letters found stashed on the grounds — this card\'s real-world counterparts, unearthed decades later.
