Located near Ala Moana and Waikiki, the harbor is a central hub for private and commercial marine traffic. Visible in the background are the rising towers of Waikiki’s mid-century hotel boom, a defining trait of 1960s Honolulu architecture. The instantly recognizable silhouette of Diamond Head crater dominates the skyline, symbolizing Hawaii’s volcanic origins and becoming one of its most iconic landmarks.
The harbor seen here is the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor, a public marina completed in the 1930s and expanded post-statehood. It remains one of the largest harbors in Hawaii and is closely associated with the Transpacific Yacht Race, which finishes nearby. The white sandy crescent of Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon appears just off the beach, created in the 1950s as part of a resort development project by Henry J. Kaiser.
