View Larger Image   North Bros. Yankee Hand Drill No. 1445 Two Speed   Description: This is a nice clean 15" long, two speed hand drill marked "YANKEE NO. 1445 NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA. PA. U.S.A. PAT AUG.23.10, JAN.16.12", on the crank handle, and "PATENT PEND." on the 3 jaw chuck. There is also a patent date on the ferrule of the head handle "APR.15.18". North Brothers was one of the top maker's of hand, breast, and push drills, from the late 1800's to 1946, when the sold out to Stanley Tools. This model was the larger 2 speed hand drill with a very slow, and fast speeds. The speed selector is the flip switch type, located near the exposed gear assembly area, it slides back and forth to adjust the speed, works just fine. We note that there is a small chip of cast iron off the area that is near the screw that holds the crank handle in place. The handle bracket is nickel plated and fits into the area of two tabs, one of these tabs that traps the bracket in place is chip off, but the screw is good size and holds the bracket in place just fine, even under pressure durning use. The wood side handle is the removable type with a threaded post at the end to attach it very securely to the main frame of the drill. The crank handle is also removable, the wood handle is solid, looks nice. The end handle is removeable and also, is hollow inside for drill bit storage, is very solid, attaches very securely. We note a owner's mark (the initial A) on the end of the handle, and a small chip of wood off the end handle at the steel ferrule area as shown in the pictures, but overall it is solid, no other damage, and in very good working condition. The handles are all solid, attach very well, study. The side handle is in very good shape. The 3 jaw straight shank chuck, has the 3/8" straight shank type, diameter capacity, and is in good+ condition, some wear noted, some tiny dings on the knurled area of the chuck sleeve, turns true on center, good jaw springs. As you can see in the pictures there is some paint loss on the this hand drill, in fact very little left intact, but no rust or pitting, with very good moving parts, and looks good too! All the gears are very good, no cracks or chips.
