Mazepinka, the youngest military hats of the Ukrainian Armed Forces|Finally, the military uniform of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has begun to be updated. Soviet-style tunics are becoming a thing of the past, and the symbols of the country of developed socialism are disappearing from military awards, military uniforms, and military badges. The history of the military hats of the renewed armed forces is interesting. A similar headdress was worn by the Hungarian and Polish nobility in the 17th century. They called him “magerka”. And they originally appeared in the Polish army in the 16th century. At one time, he did a lot to unite the Right Bank and Left Bank Hetmanate, annexing Zaporozhye to it. At the same time, he managed to limit the political independence of the Zaporozhye Sich. At that time, Left Bank Ukraine also owed its economic recovery to Mazepa.
Later the term “Mazepinka” appeared. It was proposed as a statutory headdress by Levko Lepkiy in January 1916 for the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen. Lepky was a member of the uniform commission of the USS Legion. A year later, after receiving permission from the authorities of Austria-Hungary, Mazepinka began to be produced at public expense. By modern standards, this headdress looked very stylish, strict and elegant. Interestingly, there are no analogues to it in modern army fashion.
The cut of the Mazepinka was quite complex. The band was sewn together from eight wedges, creating the bottom of the headdress. Its front part was 1 cm higher than its back. Overlays were sewn to the lower part of the band, having a wedge-shaped cutout in front, diverging at the top by 6 cm. In those days, the same material from which uniforms were sewn was used to sew Mazepinka. The statutory cap in the form of a cap stayed well on the head thanks to a fairly deep fit. Subsequently, the Mazeppas used various nationalist military units of various kinds.
Modernity has practically not changed the cut of this uniform hat. Nowadays they are made from cotton fabric or polycotton using rip-stop technology. A distinctive feature of the models is that they retain their shape even in the heaviest rain, as well as a rigid visor, which is usually sewn with six seams. These military headdresses are now popular among the general population. They are also made in insulated versions, using soft fleece as the lining material.
