1914 Earl Grey Signed Bombay Consul Appointment Document - King George of England
This document measures 29.5 x 25 inches. It has a number of worm holes and a large water stain at the top of the piece.
The document is dated January 31, 1914, and announces the appointment of "Henry D. Baker" as Consul of Bombay by the United States. What makes this document interesting is that it is clearly signed by Earl Grey.
Earl Grey is a title in the peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1806 for General Charles Grey, 1st Baron Grey. The date of this documnet would indicate that it is signed by Albert Henry George Grey, 4th Earl Grey, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, PC (28 November 1851 – 29 August 1917). He was a British peer and politician who served as Governor General of Canada from 1904 to 1911, the ninth since Canadian Confederation. He was a radical Liberal aristocrat and a member of a string of liberal high society clubs in London. An active and articulate campaigner in late Victorian England he was associated with many of the leading Imperialists seeking change. Governor General of Canada from 1904 to 1911; the Grey cup is named after him.
