This is an authentic insurance cover for Apollo 15, authentically signed by all 3 astronauts: Dave Scott, Jim Irwin, and Al Worden. It is from the personal collection of astronaut Al Worden. It is postmarked Kennedy Space Center on launch date, July 25, 1971.
Col. Worden has numbered this cover # 178 and signed the back \"From my Personal Collection, Al Worden, Apollo 15 CMP\". (CMP stands for Command Module Pilot.) It also comes with a typed letter, authentically signed by Col. Worden, attesting to the authenticity and historical significance of the item.
This is an amazing piece of space exploration history. Some great qualities:
- Authentically signed by all three crew members
- Vintage, and signed during the space program. Signedin quarantine prior to the launch. Cancelled on date of launch.
- Signed by two of the 12 astronauts who have walked on the moon, Dave Scott and Jim Irwin (1930-1991)
- Letter of authenticity from one of the astronauts
- There were a very limited number of insurance covers created for each mission
- These are a great part of NASA and the Apollo program history
Note the scan makes certain aspects of the cover appear darker than it really appears \"in hand\". For example, the glue on the envelope flap is not as dark as it appears. These are clean and in very good condition.
From the Wikipedia entry on \"Apollo Insurance Covers\":
The Apollo insurance covers are autographed postal coverssigned by the astronaut crews prior to their mission. The insurance coversbegan with Apollo 11 and ended with Apollo 16. The ability of astronauts toobtain much life insurance was limited, so they signed hundreds of postalcovers before they left, on the presumption that they would become highlyvaluable in the event of their death. The crew would designate a trusted allywith the covers who would then have them cancelled at the Kennedy Space Center(KSC) post office on the day of launch and/or on the day of the lunar landing.
Apollo 11 insurance covers normally fetch the highestprices because it was the first lunar landing mission.
There are three varieties of the Apollo 11 covers, fourof Apollo 12, two of Apollo 13, two of Apollo 14, one of Apollo 15 and one ofApollo 16. Some astronauts also left behind single signed covers for theirfamilies.
The two producers of the mission covers were The MannedSpacecraft Center Stamp Club in Houston, Texas (the MSCSC Covers) and a friendof the astronauts, Al Bishop (the \"Bishop Covers\"). Especially in thecase of the MSCSC Covers, there are many of the exact covers that the stampcollectors also obtained through the club. These were also crew signed, butmany after the mission, which makes them not an insurance cover. The essence ofa true Insurance Cover is the fact that it was signed while in quarantine priorto launch and that it was one of those that were left behind for the crewfamilies in the event of disaster. In order to be certain that a cover is agenuine Insurance Cover, it must originate from one of the crew members or theirfamilies. Ideally, the reverse of the cover should be certified by one of thecrew.
