Heckert glass, known for its exquisite craftsmanship, has an intriguing origin. Let’s delve into its fascinating history:

  • TheFritz Heckert Companywas founded in1866byFritz Heckerthimself. Initially, it operated as arefinery of mirrors and carved glass piecesused in chandeliers.Located inWarmbrunn, Silesia, the company swiftly expanded its repertoire to includehollow glass enameling, a technique obtained from the nearbyJosephinenhütte.

  • Until1889, Heckert specialized in creatingreplicas of enameled glassfrom the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, adorned in the“old German” style. However, in that pivotal year, Fritz Heckert acquired hisown glass factoryand embarked on producingiridescent glasswithArt Nouveaudesigns. These shimmering creations marked a new era for the company.

  • Fritz Heckert’s untimely demise in1890led to his widow,Zurillie, and son-in-law,Otto Thamm, inheriting the company’s legacy. By then, the Heckert enterprise employed around200 workersacross its glass and refinery factories. Notably, in1898, the company introduced its popularorange and green crystalwith motifs byProfessor Max Radefrom Dresden. This success continued, and in1904, Heckert secured agold medalat the St.Louis World’s Fair, significantly boosting sales in the United States.

  • Fritz’s son,Bruno Heckert, assumed leadership until the end ofWorld War I, when he sold the company to theVon Loesch family. The firm underwent further transformations, merging withJosephinenhütteand adopting the name“Jo-He-Ke, Petersdorf”.Eventually, Josephinenhütte absorbed Heckert completely, integrating its workers and facilities into its own glass manufacturing endeavors.

In summary, Heckert glass emerged from a rich heritage of craftsmanship, blending tradition with innovation to create stunning pieces that continue to captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike.
