Early Antique Victorian Stereo \"Stereoptican\" Viewer, c.1895, For Restoration or Parts
DESCRIPTION:Very early antique Victorian stereo viewer, also known as a \"stereoptican\" device. Made of wood, which are the earliest type, with fancy hood and trim. They are interesting devices that hold stereo view cards to provide a 3-dimensional photo effect. They enable sliding the card holder back and forth as needed to enable precise focus according to each individual person\'s preference. Fitted with 2 thick magnification lenses to enlarge the detail of the stereo photos and a \"hood\" to facilitate clear vision, as shown.
This is complete and original, except missing the lenses, so I have rated it as only in fair condition, although otherwise nice. Lenses removed for use with another device or as a childhood prank??? In any event this could be used to combine with another into 1 complete one or to use as spare parts to make one that you have functional. COMPLETE WITH HANDLE, HOOD, SLIDING CARD HOLDER, AND EVEN BOTH BENT WIRE \"CARD HOLDING PINS\" THAT ARE OFTEN MISSING. This would be very useful if you have a bad one with lenses or to use this one for a variety of parts to complete other partial ones.
These units were extremely popular during the late 1800s - early 1900s. This style is one of the earlier models, made c.1895.
Scans show details. Very usable for parts or restoration, AND IT WOULD ALSO BE PERFECT FOR A LOW COST ORIGINAL PERIOD DECORATOR. As a decorator, the missing lenses would not be noticed.
Measures approximately 13\" long x 7\" wide x 4\" high (not counting handle length).
