This Highland Dirk is an early period style dirk based on an example dating to the early 18th century. Very much a ‘common man’s’ dirk, it is devoid of ‘over the top’ embellishment seen on later period highland dirks or clan chieftains’ and lieutenants’ dirks. It is displayed on the US Air Force tartan.
The handle is hand-carved black walnut with polished brass mounts topped by a hand cut brass star and acorn nut that secures the rat-tail tang. The blade is a vintage stainless steel blade believed to be from the mid (19)70’s. It was made in Scotland by a professional blade smith. The blade measures 11” in length, just over an inch in width, and is approximately 5mm thick.
The scabbard for this dirk is completely handcrafted from 6/7 oz dark brown leather. It is hand cut and sewn and moulded to fit the blade exactly. The top and bottom mounts are hand cut from brass sheet stock. While not ornately embellished, the simple elegance sets a striking tone. The top mount is designed for the dirk to slide into it and fits very securely. The ears on the sides of the top mount mimic the ears on the blade mount of the dirk. The scabbard comes with a hand cut and sewn frog with a belt loop that will accommodate a kilt belt up to 2 3/4” wide.
This highland dirk is designed to replicate an early period survivor and not a flawless reproduction.
This high-quality, original Highland Dirk is the perfect addition to any knife collection. A great accessory for Highland Games, Tartan Day or Clan Gatherings, this knife is a must-have for anyone who appreciates finely crafted blades
