Even today, more than 90% of Japanese art copperware is produced in this area, and it is known as an area where there are many excellent engineers such as engraving and coloring as well as casting. What is lost wax casting? The lost wax casting is the method that makes a prototype mainly with beeswax and paraffin pine resin, dry it by wrapping with paper and clay, get a mold by heating it to have the wax inside flow out and then by burning it, pour the metal into the mold, and take out the casted iron by breaking the mold after cooling and hardening it. As this method is all manual one by one, it is not mass production but its characteristics is to be able to cast out beautiful steric background patterns. Producing iron kettles requires high, matured techniques in making molds and in pouring as the thin, delicate lip for pouring of a kettle also has to be casted at one time. In Takaoka where Kita Shobei studio is, the technique of this lost wax casting was established around 1624 and it has been inherited as traditional industrial art of the region for about 400 years.About Incrustation The gorgeous inlay work with gold and silver is divided into two methods. Both of them are made by craftsmanship of metal work specialists.Grain incrustation: The method that scratches the surface with a chisel and inlays gold and silver foils in the grooves.Line incrustation: The method that engraves lines in the surface with a chisel and inlays finely-cut silver foils in the grooves.Instructions for useBefore the first useTetsubin is finished by Japanese lacquer baked finish.
