Lunalilo, born William Charles Lunalilo (January 31, 1835 – February 3, 1874), was the sixth monarch of the Hawai\'i from January 8, 1873 until February 3, 1874. Due to his popularity and status as Hawaii\'s first Elected Monarch, he became known as \"The People\'s King\" Lunalilo had the shortest reign and was the most liberal of all the Hawiian monarchs. He was crowned on January 8, 1873 after the death of his cousin King Kamehameha V and after easily winning an unofficial popular vote before being officially voted in by the Legislature. He strove to make Hawaiian government more democratic and change the 1864 Constitution, but he succumbed to tuberculosis on February 3rd of the following year, before he could make lasting changes.Albumen print carte-de-visite photograph,, \"M.
