Late 18th C. Georgian English Mahogany Knife & Letter Box with Inlaid Shell For Sale

Beautiful late 18th century English Georgian Mahogany knife and letter box with shell inlay, c. 1790. Features a sloping lid with inlay shell over serpentine shaped front, with oval shaped silver escutcheons.The interior is fitted with the both divided letter and paper slots and knife dividers in the front, the interior lid is inlaid with a veneered marquetry 6 point compass star and stringing throughout. Measures 14 1/4" high x 8 3/4" wide x 10 1/4" deep. In overall very good antique condition, please note the following: key not included, the lid does not close entirely, there are wood splits to both sides, wear to the shell inlay as well as the outer veneer, some losses to the thin band on the lid and sun fading throughout, as expected with a piece of this age, please see all photos. A fine addition to any home or collection!
