In 1954, Desclee and the Gregorian Institute of America published a book called theLiber Brevior. This book is essentially the exact same as theLiber Usualis(used by the clergy), except that it has been shortened from around two thousand pages to eight hundred. It is perfect for most individuals and small choirs as it contains the most commonly used Gregorian Chant (it does not include the Divine Office). Also, there are two sets of Graduals, Alleluias and Tracts–the full-length Gregorian propers and simpler psalm tone versions (of the same music). In addition, theLiber Breviorincludes a complete Kyriale, propers for all Sundays, major feasts, votive Masses, Sunday vespers and compline, the music and for the Mass of Confirmation and the Requiem Mass (along with the burial service). Additional chants (such as those which honor the Blessed Sacrament, the Virgin Mary, and specific liturgical seasons) are also included.
All rubrics are in English. The rules and guidelines for singing Gregorian Chant are in the front of the book with clear, concise explanations and pictures of all the information and direction you need to start singing Gregorian Chant (even if you don’t know what a note is). Small choirs will be pleased to see that theLiber Breviorincludes simpler psalm tone settings for Graduals, Alleluias, and Tracts in an appendix at the back of the book. Only this edition of theLiber Breviorincludes the Mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Joseph the Worker, the Queenship of Mary, the North American Martyrs, and St. Pius X. In addition, the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is added as a supplement for those who want to use it as a votive Mass during Paschal time.
