3 piece Garniture set of Large Original Antique Ormolu clock and double candelabra
French - circa - 1850
This is a very fine and early Ormolu (finely gilded bronze) clock mounted on cream colored marble in decadent Rococo Revival style. Two cherubic babes sit on each side of a small pedestal table that bears clusters of grapes. One baby is depicted holding a wine goblet, and is crowned with a wreath of grapes, celebrating the grape harvest in a tribute to Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and fertility. The other baby holds a sheaf of wheat and flower blossoms in one hand, and in the other hand holds a harvest sickle. His head is crowned also with a wreath of wheat and flowers, celebrating the bounty of the earth, in tribute to Demeter, the Roman goddess of agriculture and the harvest. The clock is adorned with floral swags draped across the front and wrapping around the corners. The base stands on six ornately beaded feet. The dial is porcelain enamel with blue lettering and has the original finely fretted gilt brass hands. The clock dial bezel is enclosed by a delicately beaded brass rim and is completely removable. The rear door is also glazed, so the movement can be seen. The movement is high quality and is in excellent running condition, having been fully overhauled, with guarantee, by a third generation clock maker and expert in antique Clock Repair. The back plate is signed by Popon of Paris. It is the earlier design of the Pendule de Paris movement with outside hammer spring. The pendulum is a replacement. The clock strikes the hour and halves on a bell, and runs for 8 days.
Popon is listed in “Tardy Dictionnaire De Horlogers Francois” as working at Rue Charlot in Paris, 1850 - 1860.
Popon’s retailer mark is on the movement backplate. The condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully, clean and bright, with some slight wear in places. The dial is also in excellent condition with no damage. Complete with pendulum, bell and key.

The clock is accompanied by double Ormolu candelabra mounted on cream colored marble. Each candelabrum has a cherub seated on a short pedestal, and holding up a tall pedestal of six candleholders. The candelabra arms are ornately scrolled, and the base is draped with swags of flowers and leaves. Each candelabrum is supported on four ornately beaded feet. The original gilding is beautifully, clean and bright like the clock. Each candleholder cup can be removed for cleaning of wax in between candle burns.

A comparable size 3 item Ormolu set by clock maker Popon a Paris is listed on several antique dealers’ websites as $56,000 - $57,000 but is not as attractive as this ormolu set, because the dial is a strange dark blue tole ball; tole is just painted metal.
