Here's a strange story. I was selling at a relic show near Asheville, N.C., 10 or 12 years ago when this professorial type approached me and showed me two points, wanting to know if they were authentic. One was this huge Knobbed Hardin at 5" and the other was an equally impressive looking five-inch Clovis. I could tell at a glance the Clovis wasn't good, but the Hardin looked ancient, so that's what I told the gent. I asked if the Hardin was for sale but the man said he had to think about it. We exchanged phone numbers and a few weeks later he called to say he might sell the Hardin, so I drove up past Asheville from Monroe, N.C., and went to his home. Well, it turns out that this potentate was some official in the Italian government, although he was also an American citizen. He was very impressed with what he had accomplished in life, and I don't believe he left out any details. In the end, after many hours, I got a chance to ask him how he came by the Hardin. He told me that he had mentioned to a minister friend that he thought he might like to buy a frame of arrowheads for his den, and a few months later the minister called to say he had a frame he should see. It was a frame of arrowheads from Kentucky that the minister had picked up. He allowed the potentate to buy the centerpiece, the Hardin I now held in my hands. I offered $2,200 for it. The bigwig said I could have it for $2,500 and I took it after some deliberating. Just to make sure the piece wasn't too good to be true, I sent it to Dwayne Rogers who authenticated it.
