RARE Israel Israeli Oval Tin Box, 1948, Independence, Jerusalem, Haifa, Unusual
Here is a very rare and remarkable historic tin box with two handles, celebrating the birth of Israel and the Proclamation of Independence on May 14, 1948. Also noted on the lid are the Admission of Israel to the United Nations in 1949 and the start of the Knesset in 1949.
The box may be from the Atlas Biscuit Corp. It is loaded with many commemorative tributes and drawings to various events and locations. Included are:
• A map of Israel in 1948• The new Israeli flag• The Proclamation of Independence from May 14, 1948• The birth of the Knesset• The baby ward at Bikur Cholim Hospital in Jerusalem• The Rothchild-Hadassah University Hospital• The Tournalayer housing project in Haifa Bay• A machine shop at Ein Hashofet• The Jordan Dam hydro-electric development• A young officer of a Jewish merchant ship• London Square in Tel Aviv• The Wailing Wall in Jerusalem• A Yeshiva outdoor classroom• Pupils reciting lessons at a Jerusalem yeshiva• The Jewish Agency Building in Jerusalem• The first day at a settlement school• Grapefruit picking near Rishon IeZion• A typical Jewish land settlement• A young couple breaking soil at Kfar Blum• The Technion Technical College in Haifa
The box measures 11 inches long by 8½ inches wide by 4½ inches tall. It weighs 1 pound 1.8 ounces (504 grams). There are two tin handles and a tin lid.
The condition is excellent. The handles swivel nicely and the lid fits just right. The colors and drawings are strong, pretty, and eye-catching. There is some vintage wear on the outside, and the inside has typical tin discoloration spots. The many photos show the condition and vintage wear.
