SUPERB Henry Wadsworth Longfellow SIGNED CHECK, offering a RARE association between POET Longfellow and fellow LITERARY figures – Edward Everett Hale and Phillips Brooks. It is SIGNED by Longfellow as maker on the FRONT of the check.
Check is dated February 1st 1882, at Cambridge (Massachusetts), with Longfellow’s name PRINTED vertically along the left side. It was made payable to “E. E. Hale or Order” in the amount of $50 and is SIGNED by BOTH Edward Everett Hale and Phillips Brooks on the backside or verso of the check. Edward Everett Hale has endorsed the back of the check and then written in his own hand ABOVE his signature – “Pay to the order of Phillips Brooks”. Phillips Brooks has SIGNED his name BELOW the signature of “Edw. E. Hale”. The check is drawn on the “Charles River National Bank”, with an orange 2 cent revenue stamp imprinted in the center.
This is probably the nicest Henry Longfellow signed check I have ever encountered and would frame up beautifully with a steel engraved portrait (INCLUDED) of Longfellow. CONDITION: check measures about 2 ¾ x 7 inches in size and is in EXCELLENT overall condition with two round punch cancellation holes, none of which affect Longfellow’s signature. There are also three light vertical creases and two small hinge (tape) remnants on the backside of the check, probably from a prior framing (see scans).
