Joseph Manchin III(born August 24, 1947) is an American politician and businessman serving as theseniorUnited States senatorfromWest Virginia, a seat he has held since 2010. A member of theDemocratic Party, Manchin was the 34thgovernor of West Virginiafrom 2005 to 2010 and the 27thsecretary of state of West Virginiafrom 2001 to 2005. He became the state\'s senior U.S. senator whenJay Rockefellerretired in 2015. In recent years West Virginia has become one of the most Republican states in the country, but Manchin has continued to see electoral success. He won the2004 West Virginia gubernatorial electionby a large margin and was reelected by an even larger margin in2008. Manchin won the2010special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by incumbent DemocratRobert Byrd\'s death with 53% of the vote, and in2012was elected to a full term with 61% of the vote. He won a second term in2018with just under 50% of the vote. Manchin has been the only Democrat holding statewide or congressional office in West Virginia since 2021.[7]
