357th Fighter Group aces Chuck Yeager and Bud Anderson guide their P-51Mustangs, Glamorous Glen III and Old Crow through the Swiss Alps, on January14th 1945. Flying as wingmen on an uneventful bomber escort - the last missionof their second tour - the two left formation and took off for some aerialsight seeing.
Having dropped theirwing tanks on Mont Blanc and buzzed Lake Annecy, they returned low level totheir base at Leiston, having flown over a thousand miles.
Anderson and Yeager noticed much excitement on the groundand assumed the celebrations were for the completion of their tours of duty.Taxiing to their hardstands they were shocked to learn the 357th had justreturned from its most successful combat of the war, having shot down 55 enemyaircraft – a record for one day’s action in the Eighth Air Force. Anderson andYeager had missed all the action!
