WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT: this is a rare very old cast knifewing pin with channel inlay which I\'m attributing to Horace Iule, Zuni. I included pictures abo ve of several other pieces he made which use a similar design in their casting and which are separately available in my store and all of those were made later than this one. There weren\'t a lot of artists who used cast work in that way in the very oldest time and I believe that Horace Iule\'s work is consistent with this pin and in those early days channel inlay was being done more so than mosaic inlay. What is different about it is the channel inlaid stones rather than the set stones which he used rarely but which you can see in a pic of a bolo he made a pic of which I\'m including. That bolo has been sold I think and it is very much like this pin It seems likely to me that in his earliest work he would have experimented with the inlay of the stones (as that was what was being done in Zuni in those earliest of times), and that he later turned more toward set stones. The inlay includes Blue Gem mine turquoise, red abalone, white clam shell and jet. It\'s really a stunning piece. It has a working locking closure.BACKGROUND: Horace Iule was one of the all-time great Zuni artists, worked for CG Wallace and was collected by him and included in the Sotheby\'s sale, a major prize winner and highly valued by the best galleries and museums. This is, I believe, a rare early example.CONDITION: excellent vintage, wearable and collectible. Normal age related wear. There was an awful lot of black patina; I rubbed off a little, just enough so we could see the design.
MEASUREMENTS:• 2\" high and 2\" wide• weight is 17.49g• unmarked for metal content which is usual for the time, but it\'s at least coin silver at .900 to sterling at .925
• unsigned by the artist which is usual for the time but my attribution is to Horace Iule, Zuni. I included several pieces of his in the pictures above which are in my store and which are later than this which show similarity in the castings. There were only a few Zuni doing cast work of this kind in that early period.
SUMMARY: stunning early cast and channel inlaid very early knifewing pin. I included pictures of some other pieces of his I have available separately in the store as well as an inlaid knifewing bolo similar to this pin which I sold. This is a unique and wonderful knifewing. Great collectible!

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
