ORIGINAL 1893 BANKING EPHEMERA
THE FOURTH STREET NATIONAL BANK
PHILADELPHIA
DATED JULY 6, 1893
An interesting original late-19th-century banking document from The Fourth Street National Bank of Philadelphia, dated July 6, 1893.
The document features impressive period bank letterhead identifying:
Capital — $1,500,000
Surplus — $900,000
R. H. Rushton — Cashier
What makes this piece particularly interesting is that it was actually used. The document contains numerous handwritten figures, calculations, accounting notations and banking entries, preserving evidence of everyday financial business during the 1890s.
Rather than being an unused piece of stationery, this is a surviving working document from an American financial institution during the Gilded Age.
The combination of the dated bank letterhead, Philadelphia connection, handwritten accounting information and period typography gives the document strong visual character for collectors of banking history, financial ephemera, Philadelphia history and 19th-century American documents.
