Original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) camera-original antique 4x5 gelatin silver glass plate negative captured during the 1936 transatlantic passenger season: a monumental historic aviation photograph documenting the doomed German flagship LZ 129 Hindenburg during a successful landing maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, hovered just above the turf as lines of US Navy ground handlers and civilians secure the mammoth airship.

Accompanied by its original vintage tan kraft newspaper morgue filing sleeve with chilling period annotations:

  Inscribed in red grease pencil: "Hindenburg"

  Followed by period pen notations: "Graf Zeppelin before it blew up" (with "Graf Zeppelin" crossed out and corrected to "Hindenburg" following the catastrophic May 6, 1937 disaster).

Historical & Photographic Analysis:

At 804 feet in length, the LZ 129 Hindenburg was the largest aircraft ever built and the pride of commercial transatlantic aviation. During its triumphant 1936 inaugural season, the giant hydrogen-filled leviathan completed 10 round trips between Germany and the United States, routinely mooring at the naval air station in Lakehurst before its fiery destruction in May 1937 brought the golden age of passenger airships to an abrupt end.

Captured directly in-camera from the airfield apron with extraordinary scale, clarity, and detail:

• The Giant Airship: The Hindenburg descends at a gentle nose-down angle, displaying its taut, doped fabric skin, structural girder rings, gondola control car, engine cars with wooden pusher propellers, and tail fin empennage.

• Insignia & Markings: Boldly lettered along the nose in classic German Fraktur script is the name "Hindenburg", along with the five Olympic rings (carried during the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games transatlantic flights) and the tail registration D-LZ129.

• The Ground Crew Operations: Hundreds of uniformed US Navy sailors in white caps, Marines, and civilian airfield handlers stretch across the field holding onto heavy spider lines and mooring gear, standing alongside the airfield's railway tracks used for the mobile mooring mast.

Very Good antique condition. Heavy glass plate is structurally sound with no cracks or hairline fractures. The silver gelatin emulsion is clean, sharp, and stable, capturing breathtaking detail across the airship envelope, ground crew, and airfield runway. Exhibits typical period newsroom handling wear, including an authentic grease pencil / crop etching in the upper sky corner and emulsion flaking along the lower extreme border edge strictly outside the primary airship composition. Accompanied by the original period kraft morgue filing sleeve.
