Lot of three antique stereoview / stereograph cards depicting underground coal mining in Pennsylvania, titled “Mining Coal Three Miles Under Ground, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.”
Fascinating late 19th-century industrial and occupational views showing coal miners working underground with mine carts and mules. The different scenes include miners posing with working mules, a loaded coal cart on the mine rails, and a miner working beside a loaded cart.
These views are associated with Strohmeyer & Wyman and Underwood & Underwood. The Library of Congress dates the Strohmeyer & Wyman view to 1895 and identifies the subject as Pennsylvania coal mining. One of the cards is numbered 1662.
The backs have the title printed in several languages, adding nicely to the period character of the set.
Condition: Estate-found antique condition with expected age wear, toning, scattered spotting/soiling, edge and corner wear, and some fading/variation in image contrast. One card shows a little more fading than the others. Please examine photos closely for the exact condition of all three.
