π ANTIQUE EARLY 1900s RAILROAD PASSES β BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION OF THREE ORIGINAL EXAMPLES
1902 Dansville & Mt. Morris Railroad β’ 1904 Philadelphia, Baltimore & Washington Railroad β’ Undated Early 1900s Dansville & Mt. Morris Railroad
Offered together is a beautiful collection of three original antique American railroad passes dating to the early 20th century.
I personally collected these examples because of their exceptional condition and extraordinary visual appeal. Their elaborate period typography, beautifully preserved colors, and elegant printing make them especially attractive examples of early American railroad ephemera.
The collection includes two unissued Dansville & Mt. Morris Railroad passes and one beautifully completed 1904 Philadelphia, Baltimore & Washington Railroad employee 1902 DANSVILLE & MT. MORRIS RAILROAD PASS
Date: 1902
Pass Number: 1340
Dimensions: 4β Γ 2-1/2β
Condition: Excellent antique condition
A particularly attractive original railroad pass featuring an ornate illustrated company heading, prominent red 1902 date, and beautifully preserved cream-colored cardstock.
The pass bears the printed name of Robert H. England, General Manager, and identifies A. S. Murray Jr. as Receiver.
This example was never completed or issued to a passenger. The recipient information remains blank, while the reverse retains the original printed conditions of use.
Its exceptional preservation and elegant turn-of-the-century design make it a wonderful piece of railroad 1904 PHILADELPHIA, BALTIMORE & WASHINGTON RAILROAD EMPLOYEE PASS
Date: 1904
Pass Number: 1187
Dimensions: 3-13/16β Γ 2-7/16β
Condition: Excellent antique condition
An especially beautiful original employee railroad pass printed on pale green cardstock, with elaborate black lettering and contrasting red and gold-toned details.
Unlike the other two examples, this pass was completed for an individual identified as a train dispatcher at Philadelphia Terminal.
The recipientβs name and employment information appear in graceful period penmanship, adding wonderful historical character to the piece.
The pass was valid through December 31, 1904, unless otherwise ordered.
The reverse features elegantly printed conditions governing its use.
Between its intricate typography, delicate coloration, and beautifully completed inscription, this is an exceptionally attractive surviving example of early railroad UNISSUED DANSVILLE & MT. MORRIS RAILROAD PASS β EARLY 1900s
Date: Undated, early 20th century
Dimensions: 4β Γ 2-1/2β
Condition: Excellent antique condition with visible age-related reverse-side marks
This lovely original pass features soft pink cardstock and the same ornate Dansville & Mt. Morris Railroad design found on the dated 1902 example.
Unlike its 1902 counterpart, however, this example has no printed date, no assigned pass number, and no conditions printed on the reverse.
The recipient information is also blank.
These characteristics strongly suggest that it was an unused, unissued blank.
I acquired this pass and the dated 1902 example from the same individual. Their matching designs and contrasting colors make them particularly appealing when displayed together.
The reverse exhibits scattered age-related discoloration or transfer marks, as clearly documented in the CONDITION & COLLECTOR APPEAL
All three passes were personally selected for their unusually attractive appearance and excellent overall preservation.
Particular highlights include:
β’ Beautifully preserved original cream, pale green, and pink cardstock
β’ Exceptional early-20th-century typography and decorative printing
β’ Attractive rounded corners and well-preserved edges
β’ Two unissued Dansville & Mt. Morris examples, including a dated 1902 pass
β’ One beautifully completed 1904 railroad employee pass
β’ Original reverse-side printing on the 1902 and 1904 examples
As authentic antiques more than a century old, the passes exhibit varying degrees of natural age-related toning and minor surface marks. The undated pink example has more noticeable discoloration on its reverse.
