Antique c.1870s–1880s Amber Union Oval / Strap-Sided Whiskey Flask – Applied Finish – Crude Early GlassOffered is an early amber Union Oval / strap-sided whiskey flask, likely dating to approximately the 1870s–1880s based on its form and manufacturing characteristics.This is an especially attractive example because of its crude early glass character. The amber glass displays noticeable waviness, swirling, irregularities and other handmade character that becomes particularly visible when the bottle is backlit.The bottle features an applied finish/lip along with pronounced early base-mold construction. The base displays a distinctive cross/X-shaped mold feature, clearly visible in the photographs. Similar early Union Oval flasks are documented with key/bottom-hinge mold construction; however, the X on this bottle is not being represented as a confirmed manufacturer’s or glasshouse mark.Union Oval whiskey flasks were manufactured over an extended period during the second half of the 19th century. The applied finish, crude glass and early-style construction of this example are consistent with earlier production, approximately c.1870s–1880s.Provenance: This bottle was privy dug in Baltimore, Maryland, reportedly from approximately 10 feet down, along with other period bottles and artifacts. Baltimore is the recovery location only; no claim is being made that the bottle was manufactured in Baltimore.Condition: Authentic privy-dug condition with age-related haze/staining, scratches, scuffs and surface wear consistent with use and burial. There are also a few small/shallow flakes, as noted and visible in the photographs. These are disclosed for accuracy and should be considered part of the condition.The glass also exhibits natural manufacturing irregularities, waviness and crude characteristics associated with early mouth-blown glass.
