Antique French Sapeurs-Pompiers Officer’s Tunic – c.1870s–1880s
A scarce original 19th-century French Sapeurs-Pompiers (fire brigade) uniform tunic, believed to date from approximately the 1870s–1880s.
Constructed from black wool cloth in a highly fitted military cut, with a standing collar, suppressed waist, slightly cutaway lower front and distinctive shaped rear skirt. The elaborate tailoring and six-button arrangement to the rear are characteristic of 19th-century French uniform construction.
The black velvet collar patches are edged in scarlet and decorated with finely worked metallic flaming-grenade insignia. The original white-metal buttons are embossed “SAPEURS POMPIERS” with the traditional flaming grenade motif.
Of particular interest is the single straight metallic braid/galon above each cuff. Its fine ribbed metallic construction appears consistent with period rank braid. Together with the metallic embroidered collar grenades and quality of the tunic, this strongly suggests an officer or senior-rank garment. A single metallic galon may indicate the rank of Sous-Lieutenant (Second Lieutenant), although this attribution is offered cautiously because 19th-century French municipal fire-brigade uniform regulations could vary locally.
The braid now has a muted silver/gold or champagne appearance from age and oxidation.
The back is particularly attractive, featuring strongly shaped curved seams running into a narrow waist and flared skirt, with six original Sapeurs-Pompiers buttons arranged in three pairs.
A very evocative surviving piece of early French firefighting and municipal military-style uniform history.

Condition
Good/fair antique condition considering its considerable age.
The tunic retains a remarkably complete appearance, including its Sapeurs-Pompiers buttons, embroidered collar insignia and metallic sleeve galons.
There are several small pin/moth holes, wear around the collar/neck area, and a small tear beneath the left arm. An old period repair is also present; this does not appear to be a modern restoration. The lining shows some wear, particularly around the chest area.
There is general age-related wear and patina throughout, but no extensive loss, major structural damage or severe deterioration. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
