- Document SIGNED by Bronx BREWER Adolph Glaser Hupfel -- “Hupfel Brewing Company” in operation (1873 – 1920) in NYC -
Original stock certificate “book stub” genuinely SIGNED / AUTOGRAPHED by New York City BREWER Adolph Glaser Hupfel (1872 – 1945), who operated the Hupfel Brewing Company of New York (1873 – 1920). This stock book stub was removed by me from the original stock book which contained ALL of the issued stock certificates for “The North Side Board of Trade Building Company”. This stock book stub notes that “A. Hupfel Sons” was issued 10 shares of stock (certificate # 29) in the “The North Side Board of Trade Building Company”.
This was the ONLY stock certificate in the stock book issued to “A. Hupfel Sons”. This sale is for the SIGNED stock book stub ONLY, as the original stock certificate issued to “A. Hupfel Sons” was NOT found in the stock book when I purchased it upwards of 25 – 30 years ago.
”A. HUPFEL’S SONS BREWERY was located in the Bronx section of New York City and was in operation from 1873 to 1920. The brewery was initially owned by Xavier Gnant who opened the brewery in 1857. After Xavier Gnant passed away in 1863, the brewery was acquired by Anton Hupfel who also operated another brewery in Manhattan, “J. Chr. G. Hupfel Brewing Co.”. The brewery’s name was then changed to “Anton Hupfel” who ran the brewery until 1873, at which time he turned full control over to his two sons – J. Chr. G. Hupfel + Adolph G. Hupfel. The brewery’s name was subsequently changed to the “A. Hupfel’s Sons Brewery”. The two brothers were in partnership until 1883 when J. Chr. G. Hupfel departed to run his father’s other brewery, leaving Adolph G. Hupfel in charge of operating the Bronx brewery. It appears that LAGER beer was the only product of the Hupfel’s breweries.
“The North Side Board of Trade Building Company” was apparently a holding company established in the early 1900’s to manage the real estate and headquarters of “The North Side Board of Trade Building Company” in the Bronx. The “North Side” was a commonly recognized section of the Bronx, which was annexed by New York City in 1874. The company’s permanent headquarters building was completed around 1912 and was designed in a Neoclassical style by architect Albert E. Davis, who was also the Board’s founder. The headquarters served as a civic and commercial hub and was often referred to as the “birthplace of business in the Bronx”.
