You are near the Königssee, looking towards the Obersee. These jagged heights ahead are part of the eastern reaches of the Alps. It is midsummer and yet kick the flowers and grass aside at your feet and see away in there on the mountain shoulders snow and ice lie all the year around. Even the smallest patch of white that you see from here is probably a huge snow bank. And behind that house the larger mass you see is a glacier, where a great accumulation of winter snow has turned the mass to ice. The river is not yet born, slowly sliding down to melt and run off in mountain streams far below. Deer used to always live in these thick forests, but now they are almost extinct; hunters however can still find deer now and then if they are interested enough in sport. You see one of them here.
He has a powerful shot and yet it is a simple rifle, not outlandish and up-to-date in style. That block of whitewashed stone is a very comfortable home, according to the standards of this region. Notice the stones on the roof—the snow helps them to keep the house warm. The house has a thick blanket of snow in the winter. The mother cooks and spins and knits in a simple, primitive fashion long passed away for sophisticated townspeople. The gorgeous and serviceable stockings you see are home-made.
There is a school which this little fellow is supposed to attend, but the requirements are not very rigid. If he stays here and romps at home he will get the greater part of his education climbing over these mountain pastures, watching animals and divining the weather, and listening through the winter evenings to stories of old times told by the grown-up men between pulls at their pipes.
