This colorful design is reproduced as an 8 × 10 inch glossy portrait photo print and features a huge yellow CAT D9-style crawler tractor charging through a Southern swamp. A wild blue-skinned monster with blazing red hair is behind the controls as the enormous steel blade churns through mud and water.
The background is packed with Southern swamp atmosphere: cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, cypress knees, standing water, lily pads and white water lilies, all beneath a brilliant blue summer sky.

The Caterpillar D9
Few model designations in the heavy-equipment world are as immediately recognizable as D9.
Caterpillar has used the D9 designation for generations of large crawler tractors built for demanding applications such as major earthmoving, road construction, mining, quarry work, land clearing and heavy site preparation.
The basic concept is beautifully brutal.
A powerful diesel engine sends its output through a tracked drivetrain, giving the machine enormous traction and allowing it to push a massive front blade through material that would stop lighter equipment in its tracks.
Literally.
Crawler tracks also distribute the machine\'s weight over a much larger area than conventional tires. That\'s especially useful when working on loose or difficult surfaces—which makes the ridiculous swamp setting in this artwork slightly less ridiculous than it initially appears.

Large crawler tractors can be equipped with different blades and rear attachments depending on their intended work. Across the long history of the D9, Caterpillar has continually revised the machine\'s engines, transmissions, hydraulics, undercarriages, operator controls and overall design.
Because D9 represents a long-running family rather than one unchanged bulldozer, I\'m deliberately not assigning this illustrated machine a particular production year, engine model, horsepower figure or D9 suffix. The artwork identifies the subject as a CAT D9, but it doesn\'t establish a specific generation closely enough to justify inventing specifications.
Heavy Equipment Meets Monster Art
This print expands the Monsters on Machines concept beyond motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs and other powersports machines into something considerably heavier.
Much heavier.
The contrast is what really makes this version pop. Caterpillar-style yellow machinery normally lives in a world of brown dirt, rock and construction sites. Here, the brilliant yellow crawler is surrounded by deep blues, lush greens, swamp water and white lilies, with the blue-and-red monster adding another blast of color in the cab.
The enormous rust-colored blade cutting through the water gives the illustration a great sense of movement while still keeping the D9 as the dominant subject.
It\'s a fun piece for a bulldozer operator, heavy-equipment mechanic, construction worker, excavation contractor, operating engineer, CAT enthusiast or collector of earthmoving equipment memorabilia.
