Wonderful antique Gottschalk Halloween postcard, featuring a whimsical gentleman with a smiling jack-o’-lantern head, dressed in a green suit, red patterned vest, and bow tie. He stands in an open doorway accompanied by a mischievous black cat, while flying bats, playful figures, and a starry night sky complete the festive scene.
The elaborate decorative border features numerous smiling moon faces, accented by raised embossing and delicate ornamental details. The greeting reads “Happy Hallowe’en Greetings.”
Gottschalk, Series No. 1028. Printed in Saxony.
Condition: Good antique condition with visible age-related wear, including corner and edge wear, surface scuffing, and areas of rubbing and color loss, particularly along the decorative border and right side of the illustration. Some light discoloration and handling wear are present. The embossed details remain prominent, and the colorful central illustration retains excellent visual appeal. Postally used with an October 26, 1911 cancellation, original one-cent stamp, and handwritten correspondence. Please carefully examine all photographs for condition details.
A delightful example of early Halloween postcard artistry, showcasing classic anthropomorphic pumpkin imagery, black cat symbolism, bats, smiling moon faces, and richly embossed German printing. A wonderful addition to any antique Halloween or Gottschalk postcard collection.
