With the US about to go to war using weapons he invented, Lewis signs a typed letter concerning his biography (March 1917)
Typed Letter signed: "I. N. Lewis", 1 page, 8½x10¾. New York, N.Y., 1917 March 7. On personal letterhead to John Fay, Associate Editor, The Press Association Compilers, Inc., N.Y., N.Y. In full: "I accept your proposition for the publication in the forthcoming volume No. 8 in the Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography of a biographical sketch of my work, illustrated by portrait, both, however, to meet my approval before final acceptance and publication. Believe me, Very truly yours". Ink stamp receipt date of March 8. Isaac Newton Lewis (1858-1931), West Point Class of 1884, Lewis invented an artillery position finder (1891), the Lewis machine gun (1911), an artillery fire-control system, and a gas-propelled torpedo. He originated the modern artillery corps organization adopted by the U.S. Army in 1902. The US only bought his Lewis Machine Gun after the British and French armies had purchased 100,000 of them for use in the trenches of World War I. On March 3, 1917, President Wilson's Cabinet voted unanimously for a Declaration of War on Germany. The US formally entered the war on April 6. Lewis declined to accept $1 million in royalties after the US entered the war. Horizontal fold creases. Lightly creased at corners. Toned at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
