General Alexander S Diven commanded the 107th New York, an Elmira, New York unit which served with distinction the entire War. Before the War Diven wasa co- founder of the Missouri Pacific Railroad as well asan attorney and NY Senator, and was active in the Abolition Movement. An Original Letter from Diven at Jefferson City (Missouri) , July 25th, 1858 to his wife- he complains of the heat, and that even the Church Minister is as "Ardent as the Sun", He reports he tried to get cool at St Louis, but it is near Election time-he joined a crowd to listen to a "Ranting Brawl" , intended for a political speech- it was a a very stale abuse of Yankee Abolitionists" from a Candidate for Congress who was proving himself to be the very man for the support of his fellow citizens". He also reports that at all the Beer Shops, "and they are Legion" it was all politics- All their quarrels are political and the election campaign affords a good opportunity for the "fiery Missourians to let off Their excessive calories". He also hopes his wife is a little cooler, and admonishes her to "don’t forget those N-----s, I will expect to see the house Black with them on my return"- an interesting example of the casual racist language of the day even in use by Northern Abolitionists. He finishes the letter- "it Is absolutely too hot to think, much less to write, so "my dear wife, please accept a "Melting Adieu" from your husband- A.S. Diven". 2 1/2 pp ink, 8 x 11" minor edge wear, age stains, the last page is a blank half page but the letter is complete.
