John Sinclair Full Circle 1999 SIGNED INSCRIBED MC5 Poetry 1st EdScarce first edition of Full Circle: Selected Poems by John Sinclair, published by Minimal Press, Burlington, Vermont, in 1999. This copy is especially desirable for its large contemporary presentation inscription and signature by Sinclair, dated 5/14/99, the year of publication.
Sinclair was the Detroit poet, counterculture activist, blues historian, manager of the MC5, and founder of the White Panther Party. Full Circle collects his music-centered poetry, including work devoted to blues and jazz figures; the pictured “Doctor Blues,” for example, concerns pianist Roosevelt Sykes. Sinclair's poetry during this period was closely intertwined with his spoken-word recordings and performances with musicians including former MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer.
The bibliographic trail is thin, but an especially useful comparison exists: a bookseller currently offers another 1999 first-edition, first-printing signed copy—inscribed to poet Janine Pommy Vega—at roughly $60.
An excellent piece of late-20th-century Detroit counterculture ephemera combining Sinclair, MC5 history, blues scholarship, poetry and small-press publishing.
