[ The spelling of Navesink as "Neversink" in 1872 was not a modern typo, but rather a prominent example of a long-standing folk etymology and anglicized corruption that peaked in popular 19th-century literature.The spelling gained widespread national attention in 1872 specifically because it was prominently used in Picturesque America, a monumental, wildly popular two-volume travel book edited by the famous romantic poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant. The book featured famous hand-colored engravings titled "Highlands of the Neversink" (depicting the Navesink Twin Lights and Monmouth County coastline), sealing the alternative spelling into the cultural lexicon of the era.]

[Whenthe artist Granville Perkinsstood up on the hills (the Navesink Highlands) to make the painting used for the 1872 engraving, they looked down at a massive, singular tidal basin. Because the Navesink River was historically called the(North) Shrewsbury River, the entire body of water was viewed as one interchangeable system. The title simply named the water after the famous massive cliffs it sat against—the Highlands of the Navesink]
