Prince Muhammad Wazir Khan Signed Firman Berat Royalty Document Princely India:
$297.46

For your consideration is an exceedingly rare and historically important original antique circa 1835 royal manuscript document from the Princely State of Tonk, created during the early British Raj period and issued in the name of Nawab Muhammad Wazir Khan. This official Islamic manuscript, identified as a berat, firman, or farman, is entirely handwritten on traditional laid paper and features the hand-signed autograph or initials of Prince Muhammad Khan in black ink, along with his royal negative sealalso in black ink. The document remains in original, unrestored condition, showing its natural folds and minor paper loss consistent with its age. The verso bears additional inscriptions and signatures, suggesting further administrative handling or authentication.

The manuscript measures approximately 6.75 x 13.5 inches and is a museum-quality artifact, offering rare insight into the bureaucratic and royal traditions of a 19th-century Muslim-ruled princely state in India. Though the content remains untranslated, the visual elementsscript, signatures, and sealconfirm its high-level provenance and official nature, likely tied to court orders, land grants, or royal correspondence.

Muhammad Wazir Khan ruled Tonk from 1834 to 1864 and was the second Nawab of the state, succeeding his father, the formidable military commander Amir Khan. During Wazir Khans reign, Tonk maintained a strategic relationship with the British colonial government, particularly during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, when he notably sided with the British and successfully repelled rebel forces. His loyalty during this pivotal conflict ensured continued recognition and support from the British administration.

Tonk was unique among the princely states of Rajasthan, as it was the only one governed by a Muslim ruling dynasty. The state was founded in the early 19th century by Amir Khan, who had been a military leader under the Holkar dynasty. In 1817, following negotiations with the British East India Company, Amir Khan agreed to disband his powerful private army in exchange for formal recognition as the ruler of Tonk. His forces had included 52 battalions of infantry, 15,000 Pashtun cavalry, and 150 artillery piecesmost of which were surrendered or absorbed into British control. As part of this agreement, Amir Khan also received control over regions such as Rampura and Aligarh.

By the late 19th century, Tonk had developed into a fortified administrative center with a growing population, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities, including the Walter Hospital for women and a separate hospital for men. The city was also known for its architectural elements, including a defensive wall, a mud fort, and a bridge across the Banas River.

This original 1835 manuscript, bearing the personal seal and signature of Muhammad Wazir Khan, is an exceptional artifact that embodies the complex political, cultural, and diplomatic history of princely India during the British Raj. It would make a significant addition to any collection of Islamic manuscripts, South Asian royal documents, or historical materials related to the colonial and princely dynamics of 19th-century India. Its authenticity, condition, and provenance make it a rare and valuable survivor of a pivotal era in Indian history.
