RARE c1900 Portfolio 40 Early Egypt Photogravures Taken by Famous Photographers For Sale

DESCRIPTION

This is a fantastic and rare set of 40 authentic vintage photogravures (also called heliogravures) from an antique collection of early Egyptian photographs presented in a leather “EGYPT” portfolio binder.

All the original photographs were taken by several noted European photographers during the ‘Egyptomania’ period from the 1870 to the early 1900s, and then produced as high-quality photogravures via intaglio printing, circa 1900. The images were then tipped in (glued at the edge) onto heavy cream-colored paper card stock. For most of the photogravures there is a short description and serial number shown on the back or front of the image. Each actual photogravure image size measures 6-1/4 x 8-5/8 inches, while the entire card stock page measures 9-3/8 x 12-1/4 inches.

These photogravure images are still fresh to this day, with amazing depth and detail, and are highly collectible by Egyptian enthusiasts as well as vintage photography collectors. As background, in the late 1800s to early 1900s several European photographers set up studios in Egypt and produced these albums in Cairo for European tourists and collectors who would custom-select images from an available inventory. The images included major Egyptian sites, mosques and temples, desert vistas, street scenes, Bedouins, and also everyday life. Thus travelers exploring ancient Egypt could return home with quality souvenir photographs of the sights they encountered.

Not many photogravure albums survived over the next 120 years. Rarely is a group of 40 different photogravures as in this collection even offered in the public marketplace today.
