The USSR Airborne Forces during the Cold War were considered one of the most elite and combat-ready units of the Soviet Army. After World War II, they were actively developed as a rapid reaction force capable of operating behind enemy lines, seizing important objects and holding them until the main forces arrived. The conditions of the Cold War required mobile units that could be quickly transferred by plane to any region. That is why the Airborne Forces received modern equipment, enhanced combat training and a high status in the Armed Forces.
The main tasks of the paratroopers were airborne landings, capturing airfields, bridges, communication hubs, command posts and disrupting the enemy\'s rear. They underwent rigorous physical training, learned parachute jumps, fighting in encirclement and autonomous actions in small groups. The Airborne Forces also regularly participated in large-scale exercises, where they demonstrated the capabilities of the Soviet Army.
During the Afghan War, the Airborne Forces became one of the main strike forces of the Soviet contingent. It was the paratroopers who took part in the first operations during the introduction of troops in 1979, the capture of key objects and the establishment of control over important areas. In subsequent years, they operated in the mountains, desert areas and on communications, conducted raids, assault operations, escorted columns and cleared settlements.
In Afghanistan, the role of the Airborne Forces changed: instead of classic mass landings, they more often fought as highly mobile infantry. They were transferred by helicopters to heights, to hard-to-reach areas and to the directions of possible ambushes. They often acted first and carried out the most dangerous tasks.
During this period, the Airborne Forces became a symbol of the strength, discipline and fighting spirit of the Soviet army. Both during the Cold War and in Afghanistan, these troops were considered a reserve for the most complex operations, requiring speed, determination, and high training.
