Interesting old natural hoof sheath acquired as part of a collection of vintage natural-history and decorative objects.
The hoof measures approximately 5" long x 2-1/2" wide x 1-1/2" deep.
It has a heavily aged and weathered dark brown exterior with a lighter translucent horn/keratin interior. The exterior displays numerous natural growth lines, scratches, grooves and considerable surface character.
The open/rear portion has irregular loss, splitting and delamination consistent with age and drying. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition.
Based upon its size and appearance, this appears consistent with a large bovine hoof and is being offered as a buffalo/bison-type hoof specimen. Exact species, age and origin have not been professionally authenticated, so no archaeological or Native American attribution is being made.
An unusual piece for a Western collection, natural-history collection, taxidermy display, cabinet of curiosities, ranch décor or educational specimen.
