Estate fresh carved wood standing male figure in the Senufo tradition of Ivory Coast and neighboring Mali. The figure has a three-part crested coiffure with cross-hatching on the center blade, coffee-bean eyes, a carved necklace at the neck, elongated arms with hands at the thighs, and a simplified male body. The back of the head is carved with a diamond lattice.
This example is consistent with mid-20th century carving. No claim is made as to a specific carver, village, ritual type, or exact date.
Provenance: I purchased this figure, along with several other African objects, about 20 years ago from a man then about 40 years old who said the pieces had belonged to his father. No written collection documents accompany the figure.
Measures approximately 9 inches high. Carved wood with a worn dark surface and lighter wood at the knees, hands, and high points.
