Vintage Senufo Style Kpelie Mask Hornbill Bird Carved Wood Polychrome 16\" Long For Sale

Hand-carved wooden mask in the style of a Senufo Kpelie/Kpeliye’e mask from West Africa.

The mask features an elongated human face, narrow pierced eyes, carved geometric facial decoration, projecting side elements, lower extensions and a carved bird or hornbill figure above the head. Remnants of red and cream-colored painted decoration remain throughout.

This piece was acquired secondhand and includes no paperwork, collection history or other provenance. I am therefore describing it as Senufo style and am not representing it as an authenticated ceremonial mask, antique example or museum-grade ethnographic artifact. Its precise age and country of manufacture are unknown.

The mask is hand carved from wood and shows considerable age-related surface wear. Condition includes dust, scratches, abrasions, fading, paint loss, small chips, edge wear, surface marks and possible natural checking or age cracks. The carved bird, facial features, side projections and lower extensions remain substantially intact as photographed.

No cleaning, refinishing, repainting or restoration has been attempted.
