Unusual original Imperial Russian-era cabinet photograph, dating approximately to the early 1900s–1910s, showing a group of four people in a photographic studio.
The most striking figure is the young man standing at right, dressed in elaborate Cossack / Caucasian-style costume, including a large papakha fur hat, traditional cherkeska with rows of gazyrs (cartridge holders), shoulder strap, belt and edged weapons.
The man\'s appearance may represent traditional Cossack or Caucasian dress, or possibly a studio / theatrical costume, rather than confirming that he was actually a serving Cossack. The photograph is therefore described conservatively as a Cossack-style costume portrait.
Standing behind the group is another young man wearing a peaked cap and civilian-style jacket and waistcoat.
The group also includes an adult woman seated in the center and a younger girl at left. The younger girl is particularly notable for her long loose hair worn down with a large bow, an attractive period detail clearly visible in the photograph.
The arrangement of the four sitters suggests that this may be a family group, although their identities and exact relationships are unknown.
The photograph is mounted on its original decorative cabinet card with the printed especially interesting early photographic image combining family portraiture, period fashion and Cossack / Caucasian traditional costume with gazyrs, papakha and edged weapons.
