Large vintage handwoven and hand-painted West African tunic, likely from the Senufo / Korhogo textile tradition of Côte d’Ivoire.
This substantial garment measures approximately 47 inches long and is constructed from narrow sections of handwoven cotton joined together to form the complete tunic. The front features a broad blue painted/dyed central panel with a large stylized bird motif, likely a hornbill, surrounded by bold geometric and symbolic decoration. Additional painted designs appear around the neckline, sleeves and lower border.
The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art holds related Senufo tunics and Korhogo textiles from Côte d’Ivoire made from cotton and dye and decorated with animals, birds and symbolic imagery. Museum examples document the association of some Senufo painted garments with hunters, status, protective symbolism and imagery connected with the bush. This reference is included for historical and stylistic comparison only; the Smithsonian has not examined or authenticated this particular garment.
Family provenance: acquired in Africa by the seller’s mother in the late 1970s–1980s and retained in the family collection since that time.
