Description: |
Offering this nice 1-7/8" wide x 17.25" long, heavy duty, hump back or arch back socket chisel, marked "DICKINSON & CO. WARRANTED CAST STEEL" on the steel. This one is in very good, useable condition, clean, sharp, no rust, some minor staining and minor pitting. We note that there is a slight separation in the two laminations of this chisel. Many manufacturers in the 1800's used two layers of metal, in the cutting edge are, basically welding them together in a casting process, so the chisel would have the best of both soft steel on the top, and hardened steel on the bottom cutting edge area. Very often, the area were the top layer comes to a sharp point, it will chip off as seen on this chisel, but doesn't effect the use, or at least I have not found it to effect the use of the chisel in any way. The lamination is holding strong, in fact is about inseperateable. This chisel has some minor pitting near the cutting edge on the hardened steel area, but has a very sharp cutting edge, ready to use. This chisel is very heavy, by itself weight 2 pounds, not damaged or bent, but has a few dings and small dents in the soft steel area, all a distance from the hardened cutting edge. The cutting edge relief angle it a bit more than it should be, but that can be adjusted as you sharpen it back with normal use, (it's about 5 degrees too much angle right now). The leather capped end hardwood handle is in very good condition, with very little wear. A nice larger width framing chisel, by a well known edge tool maker! There is about 5.25" of hardened laminated steel left for further sharpening, enough to last a lifetime, and then some! |
