View Larger Image   Millers Falls Barber's Carpenters Brace 6 inch & Bits   Description: This is a very nice clean 6" sweep 1880's period, carpenter's brace in very good overall condition. It is marked "MILLERS FALLS MFG. CO." on the arm nearest the head, and "BARBER'S PAT'D JAN. 01.1868 NO. 14". Although most old catalogs show this tool as being a No. 4 (6" sweep), this one is clearly marked with a 1 in front of the 4, I'm not sure why. This is the nicest one of these I've seen, with very nice solid rosewood handle that are clean in in good working order. The chuck is also clean with good working jaws in really nice shape overall. The jaws on this early patented design are smaller than the later designed particularly because this is a small swing brace, and designed for smaller bits. The bits included have all been tested, and fit into the brace and the chuck holds them on true center just fine. The jaw are lightly spring loaded, but still need to be pushed opened slightly as you push the tapered end shank of the bit into the chuck mouth. The spring is located in the back of the jaws in this design, so the jaws open, but not fully when you unscrew the chuck sleeve. The jaws, chuck sleeve, and threaded are all in very good working order, as per desing of this style chuck. The drill bits are most likely from the 1930's era, all are brand names like Cleveland Twist, Morse, Keen Kutter etc., quality spriral bits, by different makers, all are sharp and ready to use. The spriral type bits are in these sizes: .062", .087", .218", .28", .28", .312", & .344".
