F. A. HOWARD Spiral Screwdriver Patent 1895

Description:
This is a unique antique tool patented in 1895 by a innovative maker in Maine. It's marked in two place one reads "F. A. HOWARD & SON MAKER BELFAST ME U.S.A." the other mark reads "PAT JULY.23.95". Howard first patented the original spiral screwdriver in 1874. This spiral screwdriver is 11 long closed, 17" long fully opened, not including the slot type screwdriver bit. The chuck is a split round collet type chuck that holds round shank screwdriver or drill bit that have two flats on the chuck end of the shank to match the female flats in the chuck to keep the bits from spinning. This spiral screwdriver/drill is in very nice clean condition with only a few minor dings on the metal parts, the handle is in clean solid condition as well, some finish wear noted, like small or minor scratches, and stain loss. We also note that a past owner had drilled a hang hole in the hardwood handle, otherwise in very solid well attached condition. This particular type does have a spiral system, that is not spring loaded, the user pulls the chuck out or away from the handle, than insert it into the screw slot, and push to drill forward or reverse. The larger brass part in the center of the main brass shaft is the controller for the directional movement. It also feature a lock position in the center of the movement, simply turn it to the desired movement position, work great. It allows you to driver screws by pushing the handle toward the screw being driven, then it will allow you to pull the handle back without turning the spiral system, so you don't have to take the slot bit out of the screw slot until the screw application is complete. A rare find, don't miss out!
We are not sure if this maker also made other driver and drill bits to fit this driver or not, but we have included two slot bits, one in great shape, and one with some minor wear, and pitting on it, each fits perfectly into the collet chuck. A very innovative design, and quite rare also!
